IGP ORDERS REVIEW OF AMNESTY REPORT.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough review of the 128-page report published by Amnesty International.
This report, titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria,” alleges a pattern of extrajudicial killings and human rights violations by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in the region.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, IGP Kayode Egbetokun emphasized his commitment to transparency, accountability, and operational professionalism. He directed relevant departments and affected field formations to conduct a meticulous line-by-line assessment of the report. This thorough process will involve cross-referencing the allegations with internal operational records and intelligence reports from police commands in the South-East.
While the Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to upholding citizens’ fundamental rights, it also noted that previous Amnesty reports sometimes included inaccuracies and sweeping generalizations. IGP Kayode Egbetokun stated that the current review will focus on facts and operational evidence, reinforcing the importance of institutional integrity.
Additionally, after completing the review, the Nigeria Police Force plans to issue a detailed, evidence-based response addressing the specific issues raised in the Amnesty report. This engagement aims to reflect the Force’s commitment to constructive criticism and its responsibility to maintain public trust through verified information.
The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to lawful and accountable policing. The Force continues to enhance its internal accountability mechanisms, improve training in human rights standards, and implement institutional reforms aligned with global best practices.
He also encouraged genuine engagement with civil society organizations, human rights institutions, and international partners.
