SOKOTO BOAT CAPSIZES, OVER 40 MISSING.

Sokoto Boat Capsizes

Sokoto boat capsizes leaving over 40 people missing. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed this incident occurred while the boat carried more than 50 passengers to Goronyo Market. NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, activated a rapid response after receiving reports of the capsizing.

Boat accidents frequently occur in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season. Overcrowding and poor maintenance contribute to these incidents. Just last month, a similar accident in Niger State claimed the lives of at least 13 people. In August 2024, 16 farmers died when a wooden canoe capsized in Sokoto while crossing a river.

Currently, rescue teams have managed to save about 10 individuals so far. Efforts continue to locate the remaining passengers. NEMA collaborates with local authorities and emergency responders to intensify search operations. The agency reassures the public of its commitment to saving lives and providing timely updates.

Reports indicate that the recent accident may have resulted from overloading, a recurring issue in riverine areas. NEMA emphasizes the need for improved safety measures on the nation’s waterways. And further urges everyone to prioritize safety while traveling on waterways.

The search for the missing persons after the Sokoto boat capsize continues as the community rallies together in this difficult time.
