Ghana helicopter crash has claimed the lives of key government officials, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The tragic event occurred in the central Ashanti region, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including three crew members.

The Ghana Armed Forces reported that the Z9 helicopter lost contact shortly after taking off from Accra at 09:12 local time. It was enroute to Obuasi for an event focused on addressing illegal mining. Unfortunately, the helicopter went “off the radar,” leading to widespread concern and eventual confirmation of the crash.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah described the incident as a “national tragedy.” He expressed condolences on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing the loss of dedicated public servants. Flags across the nation will fly at half-mast in honor of the deceased.

Among the victims were Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed and Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress party. The crew included Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The cause of the Ghana helicopter crash remains unconfirmed, but images circulating on social media depict the charred remains of the aircraft, intensifying the grief felt by the nation.

As Ghana mourns, questions linger about the circumstances surrounding the crash.
