IMO STATE GOVERNMENT EDUCATIONAL REFORM.

Imo State Government Bans Graduation Parties

The Imo State Government has announced a ban on graduation parties for nursery and junior secondary school students. This decision aims to reduce financial burdens and refocus attention on academics.

In a memo dated 15th August 2025, the Commissioner for Education, Prof B.T. O Ikegwuoha, has implemented this policy as part of a broader educational reform.

According to the new guidelines, graduation ceremonies are only allowed for Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 students. All other celebrations for younger students are abolished. This change intends to prioritize the academic achievements of students at crucial educational milestones.

In addition to graduation policies, the Commissioner has established guidelines for textbook usage. Schools must adhere to approved lists of textbooks. These texts are to be used for four consecutive years. This approach allows siblings to share resources, promoting a more efficient learning environment.

Subsequently, proprietors are warned against frequently changing textbooks each academic year. This practice places financial strain on parents and can undermine educational quality. By using approved textbooks consistently, schools can enhance the overall learning experience for students.

The implementation of these policies takes effect immediately. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MOPSE) will monitor compliance. It will also take necessary actions to ensure effective execution of the guidelines. MOPSE aims to create a focused and efficient education system in Imo State. This initiative will ultimately benefit students, parents, guardians, and the broader community.

It is no doubt that these changes will foster a more productive educational environment in Imo State.
