Man commits suicide in Imo

A man in his 50s, known as Odomma, was discovered dead after allegedly taking his own life. This tragic incident occurred in the Amakpu Okuku community, located in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. This heartbreaking event unfolded this morning as residents began their daily routines.

Odomma, a father of four, sold water in jerry cans and buckets. He faced persistent financial struggles that left him unable to provide for his family. Villagers found his body hanging in an uncompleted building near his home.

According to residents, Odomma had expressed suicidal thoughts about three months prior. He complained that his wife and children had stopped giving him food due to his inability to support them. A community member, Ikenna, shared that Odomma confided in a few friends about his despair.

“He mentioned that if things didn’t improve, he would end his life to escape the pain,” Ikenna explained. The community advised him to seek help from the village head, but tragically, he chose a different path. “Just look at how this man ended his life because of money. He could have sold his generator or GP tank for food, but he decided otherwise,” Ikenna lamented.

After the news spread, many residents rushed to the scene. They crowded around the uncompleted building, eager to see the lifeless body and capture the moment on their phones. Odomma had a reputation for being hardworking and was well-known in the community for his water sales, which started at ₦100. However, friends noted that he appeared increasingly depressed in recent months.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, Henry Okoye, stated he would verify the incident with the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri West. “Please allow me some time to confirm with the DPO. I will get back to you shortly,” he said. Unfortunately, further attempts to reach him were unsuccessful as his phone remained unreachable.

This tragedy highlights the severe impact of financial hardship on mental health within communities.
