POLICE KILL SIX SUSPECTED KIDNAPPERS IN ABIA.
The Abia State Police Command engaged in a fierce confrontation with suspected kidnappers on August 21, 2025. During this operation, police killed six individuals believed to be involved in kidnapping activities. The incident took place in Ikot Ukpon Village, located in the Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
According to police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka, officers raided a hideout and arrested six suspects. They recovered two AK-47 rifles and fifty-seven live rounds of ammunition. As the police were leaving the scene, gang members ambushed them in an attempt to rescue their captured associates. This ambush led to a violent gun battle.
While trying to escape, the six arrested suspects sustained gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, they died while being transported to the hospital for treatment. Other gang members fled the scene, also nursing injuries from the exchange of gunfire. In addition, two police officers suffered gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical care.
Police recovered several items from the suspects. These included one locally made pistol, six magazines, and a large bag containing materials suspected to be charms and spiritual items. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping in the region.
The Abia Police Command highlighted the serious nature of these criminal activities. They recalled a significant incident from March 4, 2025, when the Director of Sobaz Oil and Gas was kidnapped along Azumini Road in Ukwa West LGA. This incident resulted in the deaths of ASP Tanko Naptip from Rivers Command and Anayo Ukwu.
Additionally, the suspected gang killed Chiedozie Chijioke, the Managing Director of Dozzman Filling Station. These events prompted the Abia Police to intensify their investigation and track down the perpetrators.
The swift action by the police in this recent operation aims to deter further criminal activities in the area.
